Great colorists combine knowledge and expertise, and because they are in the business, they also get the low-down on the most cutting edge products and processes. So not only does this result in the best hair color and the best hair color application, you also have access to what is in style now. I’ve recently been blogging about what gives you the best hair color results whether you live in a major fashion center like Beverly Hills or a smaller city or town. We may not all want to live in larger cities, but who doesn’t want to look his or her best? So last blog I spoke about knowledge of product, and how colorists are not only familiar with the new products, but train to work on them. And the best colorists test each and every hair color line – color by color, so that they know from first-hand experience how these color lines perform, BEFORE they do a person’s entire head. I know because before my own colorist, Cal Martini, used a brand new color line on my head – a color line he has been familiar with from the first stages of development, – he tested it out on a tiny hidden lock of my hair, making sure it was a perfect match to the color he had been using previously..

So knowing what products are even out there and which ones are the best is the kind of knowledge you can depend upon your hair colorist to know. Staying up on the most cutting edge products is their job. And finally, knowing exactly how these products perform, so they can use them to your best advantage, is also their job.

So what are the products out there? Scan the boxes in your drugstore and you see a lot of the same brands – L’Oreal, Revlon, Garnier, Wella with multiple kinds of product. If you go to the beauty supply store you will see these same brands, but not as packaged at-home dyes. These are the professional lines that these brands offer. Hair color crèmes are in tubes, and the thinner dyes are in small twist-top bottles, for multiple uses. You mix them with whatever volume of developer you need (more on that later – choosing the right volume of developer is practically it’s own blog!) and apply. If you go to a professional beauty supply store, the kind that requires you have a license as a beautician/stylist/color professional, you will see some additional brands like Schwarzkopf, Elgon, Matrix, Redken and Goldwell. Best Anti-aging Skincare after 40

I am from the East Coast, where the sun is a lot weaker throughout the year. So when I moved to Los Angeles, the first time I got caught in traffic on the 405, I was a little shocked to find that I had a sunburn on my face when I got home. (I wasn’t even driving a convertible!!) Now- I had always been pretty minimal (a.k.a. lazy) when it came to taking care of my skin. But for some reason, that sunburn was a “teachable moment” in my life. It told me “wear sun block every single day for the rest of your life, or else end up with horrible blotchy skin with age spots.”

This seems so simple and so obvious, but that does not mean we act on it. And when we are young, we can get away with anything. Unfortunately, as we age our skin is not so forgiving. By the time we hit our 40’s and 50’s our skin is battling sun, free radicals, hormonal fluctuations, and AGE. At our age skincare is serious business, and requires products that can produce clinical results. At this point, since I am still lazy, I have a system with my skin. I hate to waste time and money on extra or ineffectual product, so I focus on what needs to be done to get results: sun protection, cellular turnover and cellular rejuvenation.

SUN PROTECTION

First and foremost, the most important part of your anti-aging skincare is the sun block and there are so many great ones on the market these days. No longer greasy or white, they melt into your skin, as they protect. Oil of Olay has three moisturizers with spfs ranging from 15-30. Any of them will work fine under your make up, or as a stand-alone moisturizer.

A brand of moisturizer with an SPF that I particularly love is Obagi, which is formulated in such a way that it is an excellent primer for your makeup as well. And Dermalogica has a nice 30 SPF “booster” for your makeup, so you can mix it with your favorite color and create a custom tinted moisturizer for yourself. STAY AWAY from product containing Oxybenzone (cheaper sun blocks use this) it causes DNA damage, not what any of us want. These days I keep a big tube of SPF 30 sun block in my car so I can never forget it. My face, my hands, my wrists, my neck – any part of me that is in the sun, get slathered with the stuff.

CELLULAR TURNOVER

After protecting our skins with SPF, the next thing to focus on is cellular turnover. Retin A and glycolics are the wonder products here. But in order for them to be effective, you need to make sure any product you use contains a high enough percentage to have an effect. You can go to your doctor and get a prescription for retin a, and then just make sure not to over-use it or you will be red and scaly. Best Anti-Aging Skin Care

The best anti-aging skincare regimens have several steps. The most important thing to know is that you must include exfoliation, (dermabrasion, peels, glycolics and retin-a) anti-oxidants (vitamins B, C, D, E and peptides), firming (DMAE) moisturizing (hyuralonic acid) and – most importantly – SPF. This applies to both men and women.

There are a million products out there and many of them are multi-purpose. Trying to figure out the best system for you can be very confusing. This is why most of us turn to an already created system like DermaQuest’s Skin Care – they have already done the work. Whatever system you decide to use or create, make sure it is one that you can maintain –one you know you will stick with. You can even skip steps now and then. The one step you should never ever, ever skip is skin protection. Your daily moisturizers for both face and body should have an SPF of at least 30, and you should keep a bottle or two in your car and women, a small one in your purse.

I believe in spending money on the good stuff and skipping the uber-expensive moisturizers that don’t have those ingredients I listed above. Which means, for example, that you should skip Crème de la Mere. Instead, spend your money on the anti-oxidants – they need to come from good sources. In addition vitamin C needs to be stable and in a form your dermis can actually absorb it. If you have a few extra dollars then you might want to check out the stem cell crèmes too, but only if they also have anti-oxidants .

The best anti-aging skin care systems feature glycolics and anti-oxidants so look for those. And stay away from drugstore brands – they use cheaply sourced antioxidants and petroleum products to smooth. Unfortunately petroleum does not actually add moisture – all it does is prevent the vitamins in your anti-oxidant from being absorbed. Your skin is your largest organ – do you really want it absorbing petroleum? I suggest Dermaquest – this is a high end product with lots of anti-oxidants, glycolics,

Salicylic and stem cell crèmes that was especially formulated for dermatologist.

Here is how I break it down:

DAILY

Glyco Creamy Cleanser 127x300 Best Anti Aging Skin Care

Dermaquest Glyco Creamy Cleanser

Step 1 – In the morning, cleanse your skin with a cleanser that respects your skin’s defensive layer, I use DermaQuest’s Glycolic Creamy Cleanser (15%),

because it helps to exfoliate my dead skin, clear my pores, moisturize and maintain my skin’s PH-level, which boosts my defense against-aging.

Step 2– This step involves layering on very important ingredients for your skin’s health onto your skin. Ingredients that are actually clinically proven to be effective are retin-a, antioxidants – vitamin C in particular – peptides, DMAE and Hyuralonic Acid. That’s it. Because you want to layer I have always preferred doing what the French do and getting these products as serums instead of creams. Serums are ingredient-rich. They are sheer, penetrate quickly and you can layer them on without clogging pores or making your skin texture too greasy.

By the way – NEVER use vitamin C and copper peptides at the same time– those are two ingredients that do not work together. I go back and forth between them, a bottle at a time. Also, use BLUE copper peptides only. And make sure your product has high enough concentrations of peptides to be effective – the same goes for anti-oxidants.

Step 3 -APPLY SPF 30 – DermaQuest makes a wonderful Daily Face Protectant

that is anti-oxidant rich called Solar Moisturizer SPF 30 ZINC CLEAR It does triple duty as a moisturizer, antioxidant rich and SPFskin protector.

NIGHTLY

Step 1 – You can wash your face with something like cetaphyl, which is inexpensive and available at any drugstore. For some reason dermatologists love this product. However for me I find it leaves a greasy film on my skin and I feel like I have to wash my face again to get it off. I much prefer a gentle exfoliator that I make myself – a mixture of sea salt, fresh lemons from my tree, and grape seed oil. If you don’t have time to mix potions then I suggest a gentle glycolic cleanser like DermaQuest Glyco Creamy Cleanser. The idea is to prepare the proper PH of your skin for the application of other products. And the little extra shot of glycolics is a great way to start.

Step 2– apply either retin-A or a glycolic acid to the skin. You do not apply these during the day as they make your face more sensitive to the sun.

Step 3 – This is when you would also apply hydroquinone for skin brightening –again, not something to apply during the day

Step 4 – Your nightly moisturizer should be some kind of crème with hyuralonic acid and DMAE.

There is one product I did not mention specifically, and yet it is my favorite – Dermaquests Hera Aragon Oil – it is something you can incorporate into your system day or night after the serums – it will replace your skin’s moisture barrier, treat your skin to an antioxidant bath and it smells incredibly good. Use it in your hair or on your face – I cannot say enough about this product.

And lastly – get a full nights sleep so your body can go through its full cycle of repairs! Sleepless nights turn into bad skin all to quickly.

Best Skincare for anti-aging

If you care about your protecting and nourishing your skin, then you should know the difference between effective skin-care products and expensive skincare products. The best skincare for anti-aging is based on the use of certain, clinically proven ingredients at the right times. That is the effective skincare. The higher the quality of these ingredients, the better. That is where effective becomes more expensive. And I don’t care if it is a little expensive, I’ll spend what I need to spend. But I absolutely hate the idea of dumping a lot of money into a pricey product that does nothing but smell good. And there are a LOT of those kinds of products out there. So my next few blogs are going to be all about skincare, focusing on what the most effective anti-aging ingredients are.

You have heard this before, and you will hear it again, and the reason is because it is absolutely true. The best, most effective anti-aging skincare product is a broad spectrum SPF. The sun is healthy, filled with vitamin D, it feels good on our skin, having a tan makes you look thinner, stronger and healthier, but you will pay if you are getting more than 10 minutes of unprotected exposure a day. And although age spots seem like a distant possibility when you are young, they actually start happening much sooner than you think, and they are NOT pretty. Neither are the hard lines that get baked into your face when you tan. If you don’t believe me check out this picture of a truck driver’s face and see what 28 years of exposing only half of your face to direct sunlight looks like.

Wear sunscreen every single day, even when it is cloudy. On a cloudy day you may not feel the burn, but the damaging rays are very busy working on wrecking your skin. Use a broad spectrum SPF all over your body. Don’t forget your feet, which take more sun than any other part of the body, if you wear sandals in the summer. And especially do NOT forget your neck and décolletage which are delicate and show age faster than your face will. And avoid sunscreens with oxybenzone in them as they cause DNA damage – mineral foundations are the best, and if you think that your makeup won’t go on well over your sunscreen then get a better brand of sunscreen! The best ones, like those by Dermaquest, are excellent primers for your foundation.

The next most important ingredient for your healthy skin is some kind of skin resurfacing product. Retin-A is the gold standard here and it is worth the trouble of a visit to your doctor’s office to get a prescription. The actual product is not that expensive. Use it every 2 or 3 days – you will find it makes your skin a little irritated at first, and you will peel, but gradually your skin will settle and get clearer and brighter. It is available in different strengths but if you find that even the weakest strength it is too irritating for your skin, then there are always glycolics. The magic of these kinds of products is that not only do they smooth your skin and eliminate fine lines as they heal the sun damage, they also even out your skin tone. Sun damage is not just measured in wrinkles, but in blotchy, discolored skin, freckles and age spots.

If you want to ramp up the effectiveness of your retin-a, then use a skin lightening cream containing hydroquinone which will fade the sun discoloration, lightening and brightening your skin tone.

There are several other great skin product ingredients that have been clinically proven to improve skin texture and tone – ingredients like DMAE, vitamin C and copper peptides. The challenge is to get products that have enough of these ingredients in them, that use only high quality sources for them and also have them in the proper form so that they actually do you some good. – no judgment when I walk in wearing boyfriend jeans and messy hair. Best of all, every celebrity stylist in there is willing to share their secrets; their go-to products, favorite hair tools and special secrets to blow-drying. All of which I immediately blog about, which is why I keep saying that if you have a great stylist, then ask a lot of questions, because the best hair stylists out there want you to look your best. They want your chic hair cut to work every day, not just the day you walk out of their salon.

It is generally only celebrities and celebutantes who can justify running to their favorite hair stylists every other day. If we want to look our best all of the time (and we do – we only live once!) it is up to us to find out how to become the best hair stylist in town – for ourselves.

So first of all, really talk to your hair stylist – don’t just tell them what you usually do with your hair, tell them your hopes and dreams for your hair! I know that sounds ridiculous, but you have no idea what your hair could do if given a chance. You only know what it has done so far, and all too often we accept those limits as real.

For example, I have been wearing my hair in some version of a bob for my entire life – a layered bob, an asymmetrical bob, sharp chin-length bob, a bob with bangs etc etc. You get the picture. The classic bob is a hair cut no-one can quibble with. Always finished, always elegant, always neat-looking – and I am SO tired of it! I prefer how my hair looks when it is wet, because then it has a little curl to it. But when I don’t blow it dry, if I try for that naturally wavy look, I end up looking like a bag-lady with hair that is flat in all the wrong places. But it wasn’t until two weeks ago that I actually voiced this as I stared longingly at stylist Victoria Boggiano’s long beachy curls.

And here is the thing. I wear a classic bob because someone – probably my mother – told me once it was my best look, and it is easy to style. I am pathetic when it comes to doing my own hair. Trouble is, as I get older, this particular cut is less and less attractive on me, and no matter how I style it I am never satisfied. I need something softer now. So as I started to explain this to Victoria, how unsatisfied I was with my hair, how boring I thought it was, blah blah blah, Victoria asked me what I liked about my hair. Well, that stopped me for a second, as I’d never thought to consider what I liked, I was too busy moaning about my shortcomings. So I told her I liked my hair when it was wet, and then I told her I loved her hair, ant that her hair is the hair I actually wanted.

Then and there, she began styling my much-shorter-than-her hair into gorgeous, loose curls, explaining every step of the process to me on the way. Meanwhile, I kept complaining that it would never stay as a look, that my hair could never hold a curl from a curling iron and that it would just fall out – probably while I was still singing (I’m a jazz singer).

Well, when she was done, I had the hair of my dreams. And it not only stayed looking gorgeous all night, it actually stayed pretty great for 3 days. So now my only question was WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG????

The Best Hair Stylist In Town – you!

No one – not even Angelina Jolie, rolls out of bed looking gorgeous. The most beautiful women in the world have had their noses shaved, their chins bobbed, a little extra something injected to puff up their sexy pouts or smooth out their frowns. In short, natural beauty is an oxymoron. Not all of us can afford plastic surgery, but most of us can afford a visit to the best hair stylist in town – at least once. Beverly Hills fashion may not be what you are looking for, but you still want to look your best. And a great hair stylist is often the difference between looking shabby and looking chic.

And when we are in the capable hands of that great hairstylist, the smartest thing we can do is ask questions. Because not only can our fabulous Beverly Hills-style hair specialists style our hair, they can instruct us. Best hair products, best hair cuts, curly or straight, these are just some of the questions you want to be asking your favorite hair stylist. Here are a few things I learned, while seated in my incredible, celebrity hair stylists’ chair.

Regardless of the texture or quality of our hair, there is a product out there that will make it right. Women who have fought their curly hair all of their lives suddenly have Brazilian Blowouts and Keratin Treatments. Those of us with fine and limp hair have some excellent mousse’s, sprays and gel cocktails to choose from that rough up the texture of their hair just enough to make it interesting.

But in the wrong hands, a hair product can be a weapon and a curse which is why it is never enough to just troll the internet or ask your friends about what to use on your hair. A little understanding of how the products actually work will turn you into the Best Hair Stylist In Town for You – at least for every day occasions! Because you know exactly how you want to look – all you need is a little assistance getting there. So once you have a great haircut and the right hair color, it is time to check out the right products.

For example – for thin or limp hair I love Minardi Luxury Hair Care’s Abundance.
